Pretty obvious signs really:

Don’t mess about with this one. Leave it too long and you’ll knacker your whole engine.
What's Actually Involved Then?
Head gasket sits between two big lumps of your engine – keeps oil, water and the bangs all separate. When it packs in, everything starts mixing together.
To fix it proper we’ve got to:
Strip half your engine down to get to it
Clean all the surfaces so they're spotless
Check nothing's bent out of shape from overheating
Stick a new gasket in with everything torqued right
Usually change the head bolts and a few other bits
Put it all back together without breaking anything
Takes us about a week to do it right. Anyone telling you they can bang it out in a day is having you on.
What's It Going To Cost?
Depends on your car really. Some are a right nightmare to get into – pipes and wires everywhere. Others come apart easy enough.
Your little 1.0 Fiesta’s going to be a lot less than someone’s 3.0 diesel BMW that needs the engine lifting out.
Then there’s what else needs doing while we’re in there:
- Head bolts nearly always want changing
- Thermostat definitely needs doing - probably what caused it
- Water pump might be on its way out
- Timing belt could want doing if we're pulling everything apart
Sometimes the head’s warped from getting too hot and needs skimming at the machine shop. That’s extra but we’ll know once we strip it down.
We’ll price it all up proper before we start. No point us guessing and you getting a shock when you come to collect.
And look, sometimes the answer’s “don’t bother.” If your car’s not worth spending the money on, we’ll tell you. Better that than you throwing good money after bad.

See, head gasket jobs get a bad name because people rush them. Don’t clean the surfaces right, reuse old bolts, skip the torque settings. Six months later you’re back with the same problem.
